At Studio Orthodontics, we put you first!
One of the most common questions we get is when someone should see an orthodontist. You may be wondering this yourself, and if you are, that’s a good thing: it means you’re taking a proactive stance on caring for your smile, something critical for orthodontic success.
The simplest answer is that you should see an orthodontist whenever you have a question about the alignment of your smile or the function of your bite. Sometimes, this is obvious: if you have problems when chewing, swallowing, speaking, or performing other basic functions, treatment is critical and it’s time to talk to us.
Other times, problems may be less obvious. Issues like mouth breathing or grinding teeth are signs that treatment may be necessary, and they can be difficult to detect on your own. Other indicators are your jaws shifting positions frequently, making noise when you move them, or accidentally biting into the roof of your mouth. If you think you’re experiencing any of these, it’s time to come in for a visit.
These general guidelines apply for adults, but children have their own specific needs and recommendations. In keeping with the American Academy of Orthodontists (AAO), we ask that parents bring their children in for an initial evaluation around age 7. There are a couple reasons that make this the ideal time for an initial evaluation.
First, by age seven the back bite has been established, allowing us to comprehensively examine the relationship of the jaws and the alignment of teeth. This lets us spot any current problems as well as problems that may develop down the road.
The second is that when it comes to orthodontic problems, the sooner they’re caught, the better. While we may or may not actually begin treatment at this age, evaluating early lets us monitor development and determine the best time to begin treatment. What’s more, we can take advantage of children’s natural growth processes to enhance treatment. When children are young, we can even use a device called a palatal expander to actually widen the upper jaw and make more room for teeth – all without surgery!
So now you’ve heard about your child’s orthodontic needs… but what about yours? Is your smile all that you want it to be, or do you think there’s room for improvement? If, like many adults, you feel the latter, then you’re in luck – orthodontic treatment is closer than you think!
While many people think orthodontics is something for kids and teenagers, this is far from reality – in fact, almost a quarter of our patients are adults. The truth is that healthy teeth can be moved at any age, meaning there’s no reason you can’t achieve the beautiful, straight smile you’ve always dreamed of. The best part? Treatment is easier than ever. Modern braces are slimmer and more aesthetically pleasing than ever before, and with new treatment methods like clear braces, lingual braces, and Invisalign, it’s never been easier to get a gorgeous new smile!
While a new smile certainly improves bite function and facial aesthetics, ultimately, treatment is about more than that. A new smile will impart a boost in confidence, self-esteem, and happiness that will radiate through every aspect of your life. Just think how much easier that upcoming date, social event, or big presentation at work would be with a smile you’re proud of – you’ll feel like a new you!
